Chisels used in hydraulic breakers for construction, demolition, excavation, and mining should be exceptionally durable in order to sustain repetitive impacts with the material they are braking, but they are not. Today’s commercially available chisel tips are typically made from recycled steel and are case hardened (just the skin of the chisel is hardened). This is not optimal. In routine use, the chisel tips very quickly become deformed, blunt and ineffective.
The durability of chisel tips affects the entire hydraulic breaker system. Retaining a good chisel point is vital to the control and performance of the hydraulic breaker. Once the operator wears the chisel past the thin hardened coating, the softer steel inside wears very quickly. The hydraulic breaker equipment, now trying to break rock with a dull or blunt tool, must work progressively harder. The result: an increase the amount of time a hydraulic breaker is used to complete a job, frequent replacement of chisels, and a dramatic increase in overall cost due to heat-induced wear on hydraulic breaker system and increased time on the job site.
